January means a new beginning for many people. If you are a golfer, what better way could there be to start a year then on the extremely green golf courses of Hawai’i.

This month's Place to Play is the Big Island of Hawaii. We chose Hawaii because of
its mild climate, accessibility and picturesque views. It is also a great tourist destination. There are about 20 courses on the Big Island and based on the many that we reviewed none of them are overly challenging. So, no matter which
course you choose to play your experience should be a pleasant one.

The greens fees are a little steep, but this is to be expected at a vacation destination. If you are on a budget vacation we suggest you do your research and visit some of the discount tee time websites to shop for a deal.

Our favorite track was Makalei Golf Club. It sits just on the side of the mountain in Kona. The staff was friendly and helpful, the course was fun and challenging, and the views were amazing! Makalei is also a very reasonably priced golf club. This course is truly a gem. However, if you happen to stay on the other side of the Big Island in Hilo, there is a municipal course there that is an absolute steal! Hilo’s 18 hole muni has aesthetic beauty, is walker friendly, and you never have a bad lie.
